Evan Hayes
Evan Thomas Hayes was born in Pasadena, California, on June 14, 1982, to Thomas “Tommy” Hayes Jr. and Deborah Hayes. He and his childhood friend Patricia “Pattie” Matsuda became parents to Lila Marie Hayes when Evan was sixteen and Pattie was fifteen. Evan supported Pattie through her medically complicated pregnancy, defended her against his mother’s attacks, and remained beside her as their friendship developed into a marriage.
Early Life
Evan was the only child of Tommy and Deborah Hayes. He met Pattie around age six or seven through a Pasadena friend group that also included Jeremy Wallace. He spent substantial time with the Matsuda family and became close to Pattie’s brother Cody.
After Cody survived a suicide attempt in 1995 and developed motor apraxia, Evan learned American Sign Language to communicate with him. He continued visiting the Matsudas despite Deborah’s hostility toward the family.
Evan’s parents divorced in 1997. He remained close to Tommy and lived with him after the separation.
Neurotype
Main article: Autism Spectrum
Evan was autistic. He processed new information carefully, preferred systems and concrete data, and relied on research, lists, and spreadsheets to organize complex problems. Under sustained stress, his focus on planning and information intensified. During Pattie’s pregnancy, he tracked expenses, researched medical complications, and tried to create enough structure to manage the uncertainty.
Evan shared this methodical processing style with Tommy. Both men preferred smaller groups and thoughtful pauses to rapid social exchange, and both expressed care through consistent action and practical support.
Teenage Parenthood
Evan and Pattie conceived Lila after a drunken encounter at Jeremy’s party in spring 1998, when both were fifteen. When Pattie told Evan that she was pregnant, he replied, “Okay. We’ll figure it out together.” He accepted equal responsibility, did not question Pattie’s account of the pregnancy, and publicly affirmed that he believed her.
During the pregnancy, Evan attended school, worked at Burger King, and helped Pattie with daily needs and medical appointments. The schedule became physically unsustainable, and the adults supporting the teenagers intervened when they recognized how severely Evan had exhausted himself.
Deborah blamed Pattie for the pregnancy, questioned Lila’s paternity, and used Pattie’s ADHD against her. Evan rejected those claims and told Deborah that she could not remain in his or Lila’s life if she did not respect Pattie.
Lila’s Birth

Pattie’s preeclampsia progressed to pulmonary edema in late October 1998. When the medical team recommended an emergency delivery at thirty-one weeks, Evan told her, “I think I want you alive. Both of you. Whatever it takes.”
Lila was born by emergency cesarean section on October 28, 1998, weighing three pounds, one ounce. Evan met her in the neonatal intensive care unit before Pattie regained consciousness and gave the staff her full name. He and Pattie remained involved throughout Lila’s NICU stay and cared for her together after discharge.
Family and Core Relationships
Patricia Matsuda
Main article: Patricia Matsuda and Evan Hayes
Evan and Pattie became friends in elementary school. He developed romantic feelings for her in sixth grade but did not disclose them during most of their friendship. After Lila’s birth, they initially continued as co-parents.
Approximately three weeks postpartum, Evan told Pattie that he had loved her since sixth grade. Pattie said that she trusted him and felt safe with him but was not yet ready to say that she loved him. Their relationship developed gradually from friendship and co-parenting into a romantic partnership, and they later married.
Tommy Hayes
Tommy responded to the pregnancy by asking Evan, “What do you need from me?” He provided practical, financial, and emotional support throughout the pregnancy and after Lila’s birth. Evan remained close to him and later relied on his example of consistent, nonjudgmental parenting.
Deborah Hayes
Evan’s relationship with Deborah deteriorated after he heard her make cruel remarks about Cody in 1995. Her treatment of Pattie during the pregnancy led Evan to impose a firm boundary between her and his new family.
Lila Hayes
Evan accepted parenthood from the time Pattie disclosed the pregnancy. He met Lila first in the NICU, participated in her care there, and shared her newborn care with Pattie after she came home.
